Good Morning
Shintaro Yamakawa was born in Aichi (Japan) in 1980. He moved to Kingston/Pennsylvania (USA) in 1996 to study at a Methodist Christian high school. During that time, he made countless trips to New York City in order to visit galleries. On one of these trips, he happened to see “Sensation”, a show by Young British Artists, at Brooklyn Museum; an experience, which influenced his decision of pursuing his career as an artist. He then moved to Kingston/Ontario (Canada) in 2000 in order to attend Queen’s University, where he studied under Sylvat Aziz and Mathew Blakely and received his BFA. Yamakawa’s father, Michihiro, is an engineer and likes to play soccer. His mother, Takako, is a good cook and likes to sing. Shintaro Yamakawa received his MFA at Chelsea College of Art and Design in London (UK) in 2007. He has exhibited his works in numerous venues in Canada and the UK, already. He identifies as Buddhist and meditates regularly. He currently lives and works in Berlin (Germany).
Having grown up with diverse educational and cultural backgrounds, he integrates and expresses these aspects in his works.
Through looking at objects and feeling his bodily movement while drawing, he contemplates, connects with, and expresses spiritual and fantastical worlds via objects as lenses in order to look through the fluid and open world – where everything is connected and has no inside/outside. He aims to express a sense of ecstasy, empathy, and universal compassion in/through his works.
